London to Amsterdam – why not?

Approximately two years ago I set out to organise a London to Paris bike ride for anyone at work that was interested in coming with me. The aim, was to raise money for the charity Sanitation First and the consequence would hopefully be fun as well as a positive outcome for the charity. It was and on both accounts.

We raised just over £20,000 for charity and the industry I work in couldn’t have been more supportive. The riders that joined us loved cycling as much as I did and they were all great fun to be with. So, I’ve decided to do it again and this time from London to Amsterdam.

As I write, I have lots of unanswered questions. How many people will be a sensible number to take? How will everyone get back? How will I cope with the expectancy of the other riders, when in reality I’ve never even done the ride before. On the surface it’s a pretty silly thing to do as it leaves me exposed. After all, there is a reason professional companies are charging £1,000 plus for the very same trip and I am hoping this one costs half that. However, I’ve said it aloud now and that means there is no going back.

No doubt over time I will solve these problems and it will come together. It has to. Regardless, if I focus on the ground work now and maybe even do a quick dry-run in a small group without any fuss in 2020 it might just be what is needed to iron things out. Either way, I will let you know how I get on and I am sure you will be hearing more from me on this yet.
